Diodorus Siculus writes that Atlas was the first to represent the world by means of a sphere, and for this reason he was said to carry the heavens on his shoulders. Hesiod relates that Atlas was forced to hold the entire vault of heaven on his shoulders at the behest of Zeus, who decided to punish him because during the “Battle of the Titans” he had allied himself with Cronus when he led the Titans against the Olympian gods. In the Odyssey (Book I) he is poetically described as one of the pillars of heaven.
